Samsung may supply Apple with OLED panels for iPhone, says report

Given Apple’s history of not saying anything about supply chain related matters we can be absolutely sure that the company won’t confirm if the next-gen iPhones have OLED and LCD panels. Should Apple decide to tap Samsung as its OLED screen supplier, the move could affect the South Korean firm’s supply for its own smartphones, the report details.

Smartphone competitors, Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc., will be working together to produce the next generation Apple Watch.

We should also point out that, according to other, recent reports from Japan, Apple and JDI will continue their collaboration for the 2016 line-up, implying that the iPhone 7 could retain an IPS LCD panel.

Prior to this contract, LG Display was the only supplier of displays with the Apple Watch and with this milestone; Apple would use multiple vendors in order fulfill its needs of the components, such as its processors and memory chips.

The ETNews report, first spotted by Digitimes, states that Apple is expected to make a decision in November on whether to include the panels in the next iPhone. The new iPhones could potentially end up using Samsung’s AMOLED technology if this deal goes through, which would be quite exciting as Samsung’s displays are always very highly rated on Galaxy devices. The report also claims that Apple is considering using Samsung’s OLED displays for use in its future iPhone models as well.

McLeod speculates on a few possible reasons for the rejection: It could be that placing foreign objects (or liquids) on the display creates too much of a damage risk, or that measuring exact pressure is not what Apple intended for its API.
