Under the remedy announced on the CPSC website, customers will receive refunds for Note7 phones sold before Thursday or replacement without charge with a new Note7 with a different battery, which Samsung Electronics said would be available not later than September 21. Still, the CPSC is concerned enough to issue a formal recall, in which it is asking United States consumers to return more than 1 million purchased units.

According to an update on Samsung’s website, new units are expected to arrive at carrier and retail outlets no later than Wednesday, Sept. 21. “Go to http://www.samsung.com for more details”. However, Samsung announced its own program without involving regulators. In its home market of South Korea, the company says it will debut a new “battery-problem-free” Note 7 phone on Monday. Those who bought it directly from Samsung should contact the company.

The Galaxy Note 7 is a hugely important product for Samsung. Customers were instructed to contact their retailer to exchange the device for another Samsung phone or a refund.

This information jibes with data from analytics firm Apteligent, which says that “usage rate of the phone among existing users has been nearly the exact same since the day of the [unofficial] recall”.

Samsung listed how to find the IMEI or serial number on the affected Note 7 phones and how to check it online.

If you haven’t already, make sure to power down the Note 7 and stop using it.

US aviation safety officials also have taken the unusual step of warning airline passengers not to turn on or charge the phone during flights, or put them in checked bags.

“With battery cell defects in some of our Note 7 phones, we did not meet the standard of excellence that you expect and deserve”, said Tim Baxter, president and chief operating officer of Samsung Electronics America in a video statement.
