Samsung recently recalled their Galaxy Note 7 smartphone after a number of the handsets caught fire due to problems withe the battery.
The Note 7 is available in four colors – Black Onyx, Silver Titanium, Gold Platinum and Blue Coral. Although Samsung managed to limit the impact on United Kingdom customers by issuing the recall on the day of the United Kingdom launch, some pre-orders were sent out early and will need replacing.
Before the Note 7 episode – where 35 cases of faulty batteries were reported globally – marred its reputation somewhat, Samsung has had a great run. Customers in different markets will receive different advice as to when they’ll get a new Galaxy Note 7, but in the United Kingdom, expect things to ramp up in a couple of weeks time.
Did Samsung overlook qualty checks in order to launch Note 7 in a year when Apple is set to launch iPhone7?
South Korean brokerages have slashed their forecasts for Samsung’s third-quarter operating profit.
The smartphone was launched two weeks ago with Apple expected to release its latest iPhone next week.
As a precaution Samsung is starting an Exchange Programme and is directing customers to their retailers and network providers who they are working with to replace phones from the early shipment with new ones which will be stocked from September 19th. While there have been 35 cases reported to date, the company made a decision to issue a global recall just to be sure.
With Samsung estimated to have already sold around 1 million Galaxy Note 7s since the smartphone was released just last month, it’s a major headache for consumers affected by the recall. “Samsung might have over-exerted itself trying to pre-empt Apple, since everybody knows the iPhones launch in September”, said Chang Sea-Jin, business professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and author of “Sony vs. Samsung”, a history of the electronics giants. The Galaxy Note 7 was charging with its original charger.
Since we have seen quality devices from Samsung in nearly all price segments, it is hard to believe that it missed on quality checks.
“Samsung is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously”. The normal method is to get on board with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, who will help to track the recall and ensure that recalled goods don’t remain on the streets.
