Samsung rolling out a temporary fix for exploding Galaxy Note 7

In an effort to steal a march on Apple, the Note 7 was given an early launch in the key United States market, making that a priority for the recall effort.

In the US, the company is working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to figure out how a formal recall of the phones will work.

Samsung plans to issue a software update for its recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphones that will prevent them from overheating by limiting battery recharges to under 60%.

“We plan to carry out the Galaxy Note 7 software update starting from 2 a.m. on September 20”, Samsung said, adding that the measure would only apply to phones that hadn’t been exchanged for new ones in a recall planned for September 19.

NEW YORK-Following a massive recall and news that the airline industry was requesting owners of Samsung Galaxy Note 7s not to use their phones on planes, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority made a similar request on Tuesday. Samsung Electronics on September 1 announced it would fully replace all Galaxy Note7 sold in the first month, having discovered default in lithium-ion battery pack. It has recalled 2.5 million of the devices after dozens of reports of them exploding or catching fire.

Just over a week ago, Samsung Electronics announced a global replacement program for the Galaxy Note7 as a precautionary measure due to a battery cell issue.

All Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones will be allowed in hand bags and when kept switched off until the disembarkation. Samsung clearly thinks it’s necessary given the increasing number of reports of units exploding across the world. An investigation found faulty rechargeable lithium batteries. The procedures are different in each countries but it’s best if consumers go to where they purchased the Note 7.

The software update appears to be a last-ditch effort to contain the crisis. This cap aims to ensure that the battery does not overheat. Samsung didn’t respond to a request for more information on the software patch.
