Samsung’s $100 Gear VR is now available for preorder

Good news, Samsung Galaxy owners: Now you can see for yourself if virtual reality is really worth the hype. The app will be ready for the consumer launch of the Gear VR, although it’s not clear just how the title will be distributed. The Galaxy Note 5, S6, S6 edge, and S6 edge+ can all be plugged into a Gear headset at release, allowing many Android customers to jump in with their current smartphones.

Want one? Place a pre-order at Best Buy right here, and you’ll be set to get one as soon as the launch date arrives (which Best Buy claims is Friday, November 20th).

But now, the Gear VR headset is much improved – it’s 19% lighter than its predecessor – and it’s much cheaper, too.

The content available on Gear VR leans heavily toward games and video.

What’s really promising is the Gear VR is compatible with more devices than initially planned in Sept 2014.

Users of the Samsung smartphones listed above will be able to plug their device into the Gear VR and strap the headset over their eyes to enter the virtual reality universe, as presented by Oculus and Samsung. You can literally watch everything on Netflix, including original series and documentaries, as well as any movie now available in the “Oculus Video” catalogue, which has more than 70 feature films as well as access to thousands of videos from Vimeo and live broadcasts from Twitch.

The release comes at a big moment for VR, with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR all expected in the first few months of 2016.

But Gear VR also has internal sensors to accurately track head movements. $99 is a small price to pay for all of the content that’s now available.
