Samsung’s new smartwatch features mobile payment, GPS

Samsung today has unveiled the Gear S3 during IFA at Berlin and gave a peek at whats next. Its actual dimensions aren’t that much larger – it has a 46mm casing and a 1.3-inch display, compared to 44mm and 1.2-inches on the S2 – but the jump feels significant.

The bezel also means, without touching the screen, users can accept or reject a call or snooze an alarm.

The Gear S3 also includes IP68 water resistance, contactless Samsung Pay, 4G LTE connectivity and in-built Global Positioning System. At this time, the Gear S3 supports only Android.

“Now with the new Gear S3, we expand our Gear collection and introduce not only a great smartwatch, but a great watch”. Samsung Gear S3 is available in two bold designs to suit different users’ lifestyles: frontier and classic.

Unfortunately, while a release date for the new tablet may already have been identified, exactly what it will feature remains largely unknown at this point. The Gear S3 Classic will be available in October for $299.

Samsung did not disclose the prices of the new smartwatches, which are expected to go on sale in South Korea and the United States in the third-quarter of this year. The ability for the screen to dim in low-light settings make it easier to see in dark environments and adds a sense of refinement. As a result, there’s now PIN protection on the watch, thoug. Where the Gear S2 could last around three days between charges, the Gear S3 should last around four days. Samsung does say that it’ll continue to sell the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, though, as well as support them with software updates that’ll include “select Gear S3 features”.

As Gizmodo reports, while most smartwatch manufacturers are using Google OS, Samsung is committed to running its Gear devices on its own operating system called Tizen.

Since the Classic model does not have LTE connectivity, it relies upon either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections.

Overall, the Gear S3 is stacked with features to make the experience easy and intuitive for users. The one caveat is that this new aesthetic also makes the watch bulkier, which could be troublesome for those with tiny wrists.

Music lovers should also love the fact that the Frontier version of Samsung’s new smartwatch lets you load up to 4GB of music or stream your tunes directly from Spotify. Fitness aside, many consumers seem to be awaiting some sort of “must have” aspect before jumping into the smartwatch waters.
