In an emailed statement, Samsung India spokesperson said, “We are now conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market”.

The recall plan came just days before archrival Apple is scheduled to release its latest versions of iPhone and Apple Watch next week.

All major United States carriers have stopped selling Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, and some of them have even offered customers the option to trade their device for another one in the company’s portfolio or get a full refund.

Samsung’s investigation had been underway after media reports said that some of the large-screen smartphones had caught fire while charging.

The Galaxy Note 7 launched last month, and was a device that Samsung had a lot of high hopes for.

Samsung’s official statement was silent on whether customers should stop using their phones, and it didn’t say whether the problems happened while the phones were charging or during normal use.

The company noted that a thorough inspection with its suppliers is now being conducted in order to identify the possible affected batteries that are already on the global market.

US carriers are also offering customers other options including a refund or credit toward another device.

Mr Koh promised that the company would work with their worldwide telco partners to replace the phone ‘as soon as possible’.

The device was to be made available in the Indian market from Friday. For customers, who have Galaxy Note7 devices, Samsung will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one.
