Samsung to open VR movie studio in New York: ‘We love stories’

The company has announced to open its very own Virtual Reality (VR) studio in NY.

It’s all a bit mysterious, but Samsung definitely picked the right place to reveal the studio: Utah’s Sundance Film Festival. Marc Mathieu, chief marketing officer of Samsung USA, said only that the studio would be located in an existing Samsung office already inhabited by a marketing team.

Without a doubt, virtual reality will soon be taking off to change the way consumers view content. Samsung Electronics is on the front lines of the virtual reality revolution with a mass-market headset and a dedicated studio that will produce more experiences in immersive, 360-degree, three-dimensional content.

As VR gains in popularity, Samsung and Facebook want to lead on the content production front rather than be seen as mere device manufacturers.

Samsung also included in the announcement a new year-long partnership with the Sundance Institute, the organization in charge with arranging the festival. But by the end of the year it will be if a cadre of filmmakers, game designers, and tech executives has anything to say about it. At the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, details on the winning entries will be unveiled, with the winning content available to enjoy on Samsung Gear VR.

At the moment, not much is known about the company’s new studio. Gaming isn’t the only area where VR is anticipated to make a difference, as both new films and experiences are exploring the nascent virtual space.
