Apart from the RAPID mode, the drives also feature Turbo Write – which basically accelerates the write speed during data transfer. Not content with tackling the “internal” storage market, the company introduced the Portable SSD T1, which is essentially an 850 EVO wrapped in a pretty enclosure with a USB 3.0 interface. The 850 Pro 2TB is priced at $1000 and the 850 EVO 2TB is $800.
While still way more costly than regular hard drives, the 2 TB Pro and Evo from Samsung have brought SSDs on par with the regular memories – with regards to storage capacity – for laptops, and we hope that the steady reduction in SSD prices, which begun early this year will continue until they become more affordable to the general public. For comparison, the 1TB 850 EVO and 850 PRO have street prices of around $377 and $487 respectively.
Samsung backs the 850 EVO with a five-year warranty, while Pro buyers are treated to ten years of support. The capacities include 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB models. Both also contain 4 chips of 3D-VNAND memory on each side, each chip representing 256GB of RAW capacity. Measuring in at the same dimensions of 7mm thick and 2.5 inches in size, these SSDs are aimed at consumers and are the first major brand to do so. Having good sales on its portable HDDs like the 4TB M3 and P3 series, the 850 will clearly push forwards Samsung’s market leadership against its main rivals, especially Intel and Western Digital. Both have an available capacity of 1908GB once formatted.
For the goal of our benchmarks today, we will test the 850 Pro followed by the 850 EVO.
The company said the latest 2TB SSD boasts the industry’s top performance and power efficiency. Just as a bit of a heads up, the performance of both is very similar.
