Samsung Z1 with Tizen tops 1M sales in India; more handsets planned

According to a report from Reuters, Samsung’s own operating system called Tizen could be installed in new devices when they are launched this year. The report says that Samsung plans to launch multiple devices with Tizen at several different prices. While another South Korean wireless carrier, KT, has already announced plans to unveil its 5G networks during the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in the East Asian country, it also believes 2020 to be a more realistic target for the commercialization of 5G networks globally.

Like Google’s Android, Tizen is an open-source operating system designed to run on devices of all kinds, including smartphones, tablets and televisions. It is the first smartphone to feature Samsung’s homemade Tizen OS, which was previously delayed for over two years.

Samsung has sold one million Z1 smartphones to date, with availability in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The device is available for under $100 off-contract, making it affordable for customers who want to jump into the smartphone market but don’t have the cash to buy a higher-end alternative running Android or iOS.

Given the popularity of the Z1 in India, Samsung will be launching Gold-colored version of the smartphone, which will be available for purchase for just Rs 5,000 ($80 / €70) outright.

In May, Samsung maintained its No. 1 position in the USA TV market with its market share by sales standing at 34.1 percent.

Warsi further added that the number of apps on the Tizen Store had doubled since January 2015. The phone launched in January 2015, and since then it has sold over a million units. Last October, Omnicom Group’s Interbrand consultancy, which Samsung uses as their official yardstick on such matters, bumped Samsung up to No. 7 in its list of the world’s biggest brands, within reach of the top five.
