Last week, retailers in the state sold more than $1.25 million in Powerball tickets, and total sales for the current run beginning November 5 are more than $5.5 million, Woosley said. The Powerball itself includes more than twice as many numbers.

On Wednesday, the winning numbers of the $500 million Powerball jackpot will be drawn, and one or more people across the country may become multi-millionaires overnight. Nationally, 316 prizes of $1 million or $2 million have been won in the past year.

“All I can do is hope”, said another ticket buyer.

Soaring ticket sales have boosted the jackpot, which could climb even higher if the winning numbers remain elusive.

Powerball is played across 44 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The $500 million is an annuitized amount, so you won’t get all of that if you choose to get a lump sum payment. 2 NEWS Reporter Jordan Bowen talked to some ticket buyers here earlier today, who have say they have big plans if they hit the jackpot.

If no one wins tonight that jackpot will continue to rise, that lucky victor could be picked tonight at 10.

The husband and wife say they rarely play the lottery, but a big jackpot got their attention. If only one person hits the magic numbers, the cash payout would be $306 million – not too bad.

Tickets will be sold until 10pm.
