The San Diego Police Department announced on Twitter that one officer died.

Police in San Diego said one officer was fatally shot and another seriously wounded during a traffic stop late Thursday night near downtown.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has vowed to be tough on crime, commented on the San Diego shooting on Twitter, saying, “It is only getting worse”. A suspect is in custody, police tweeted. “Keep him in your prayers”.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman confirmed the death at a news conference in front of Scripps Mercy Hospital early Friday.

Police searched the area for suspects and urged residents to stay indoors, at this time no details have been released on how the shooting started. Zimmerman said the two officers, both members of the department’s gang suppression unit, radioed shortly before 11 p.m. that they were going to stop someone.

The slain officer left behind a wife and kids, according to KGTV reporter Brian Shlonsky. “I ask all San Diegans and all people across our nation to join together in support of our officers who courageously protect our communities”.
