San Diego man charged with murder of police officer
Jonathan De Guzman’s burial will follow the second memorial service in two days for the decorated officer, a 16-year veteran of the force. His gang-unit partner, Officer Wade Irwin, 32, also was seriously injured but was able to return fire and is expected to recover.

When partners and friends of slain San Diego Police Officer Jonathan DeGuzman called Ramona Lisa Pizza and Subs restaurant to order food for a gathering, the restaurant owners didn’t think twice about donating everything they ordered.
A man accused of fatally shooting a San Diego police officer and injuring another on July 29, has been charged with murder, attempted murder and felon in possession of a firearm, CBS News 8 reported.
BONITA, Calif. (AP) – Jonathan De Guzman, a San Diego police officer who survived a stabbing 13 years ago and shot at a gun-wielding man three years ago, will be buried Friday after being fatally shot in the driver’s seat of his patrol vehicle after his partner approached a man on the street.
Officer DeGuzman was a husband and father of two kids.
San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, who worked directly with De Guzman earlier in her career, delivered the eulogy at Thursday’s standing-room only service, which was closed to news media.
De Guzman’s family, which includes a wife and two children, appeared “very touched and moved”, said the Rev. Efrain Bautista, the church pastor.
A larger memorial service is planned Friday in suburban El Cajon. The first of two memorial services will be held Thursday, Aug. 4, for a San Diego police officer who was fatally shot during a traffic stop.
Gomez grew up in a modest house in southeastern San Diego, about a half-mile from where the shooting occurred.
All the events will be open to the public.

Police have not determined a motive for the killing. The construction worker has a criminal record stretching back to 1983, including a conviction for auto theft and drunken driving.
The alleged assailant, 52-year-old ex-con Jesse Michael Gomez, was critically wounded in the exchange of gunfire and remains hospitalized.

De Guzman died 13 years after surviving a stabbing while on duty, for which he received the department’s purple heart. The San Diego County district attorney found the shooting was justified.
