San Diego Padres vs. Boston Red Sox

Clay Buchholz turned in another fine outing Tuesday night in the Red Sox’ 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres. Price is 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA in his last five starts for the Red Sox, who pulled into a first-place tie with Toronto atop the American League East with Tuesday’s 5-1 victory.Boston’s starting pitchers improved to 15-8 with a 3.06 ERA since August 1 after Clay Buchholz allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s win, but rookie third baseman Yoan Moncada is having a series to forget.

“It’s pretty cool to go out there and face those guys; it’s a playoff team, ” Cosart said of the Red Sox, whose three-run fourth inning proved the difference in the game. “But then I have a hiccup”. The Red Sox designated hitter was limited to pinch-hitting duties during the three games at Petco Park.

Right handed pitcher Paul Clemens was on the mound for the Padres. It was a fluke deal.

The Padres meanwhile will look to shake off the rust and get back in the win column but they have their hands full here with one of the best offenses in baseball and one of the bets pitchers in the league all wrapped up into one game. “The rest is kind of history”.

“Not really sure which one is worse right now”, Padres manager Andy Green said. “At first, we thought it might be a cramp, but we didn’t want to let him try again”. Before his return, Jay played in three rehab games for Single-A Lake Elsinore, where he went 3-for-10 with a double, a walk and three runs scored.

Villanueva replaced Cosart and immediately gave up back-to-back singles by Chris Young and Shaw, the second hit scoring Bradley with the tiebreaking run.

Price surrendered an RBI double in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third, but held the Padres bats dormant the rest of the game. Dustin Pedroia’s line double toward the left field corner with two down plated a pair for a 5-2 lead, effectively putting the game away behind Price.

Khris Davis hit his 35th homer leading off the seventh to pull Oakland within 8-7, but his ninth-inning error in left field allowed Andrelton Simmons to score an insurance run.

The Padres tied the game in the third.

Shaw, inserted into the lineup for a slumping Yoan Moncada, hit his 16th homer in the second inning, a two-run shot, and added an RBI single in the fourth. Smith, 26, a 48th-round draft pick of the Giants in the 2011 draft, was promoted by the Padres from Double-A San Antonio earlier Wednesday. Boston, which completed interleague play with a 14-6 record, opens a three-game series in Toronto on Friday.
