Zimmerman announced Friday that evidence led them to the home but she did not give any details. SDPD surrounded the building and spent hours trying to coax the suspect to surrender, but when officers finally went inside, they discovered that the suspect had escaped.

An hours-long SWAT standoff for a potential second suspect in the slaying of a San Diego police officer has ended after he wasn’t found inside the house.

San Diego’s mayor and police chief will answer questions Saturday at the hospital where a wounded officer is recovering after a gunbattle that killed his partner.

They were part of the San Diego PD Gang Suppression team, but there was no word on any motive for the shooting or whether it was an ambush, police told CBS News.

Officers Jonathan DeGuzman and Wade Irwin were shot during a stop on Thursday night.

The murder of DeGuzman comes on the heels of police officer murders in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dallas, Texas. Nearly immediately, very shortly after they put out that they were making a stop, they called for emergency cover.

Grover Beach Police Chief John Peters says black bands have been placed around their badges once again.

Both men were wounded despite wearing bulletproof vests.

Earlier, Zimmerman told reporters she knew DeGuzman well.

Officer DeGuzman was shot multiple times and he later died in the hospital.

Officer Irwin is a nine-year veteran who is also married.

Wade Irwin, 32, underwent surgery after being shot and was expected to survive, Zimmerman said. The accused gunman, identified as Jesse Michael Gomez, 52, was charged with murder and attempted murder in the case.

An individual thought to have participated in the shooting is in custody and is now in critical condition while recovering from a gunshot wound. The police chief says he’s expected to survive. A helicopter hovered over the neighborhood. Authorities also detonated several devices at the scene to draw him out and used tools to break windows and pound on the roof.

Gomez’ name was released by the department on the evening of July 29 after a manhunt resulted in the arrest of a possible second suspect.

Zimmerman said police were investigating whether Cassani, who has a criminal record that includes drug, weapons and burglary convictions, had any role in the police shootings. Zimmerman said his wife was by his bedside at the hospital.
