National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, which tracks the number of police killed in the line of duty, reported that 32 officers have been shot and killed this year – a 78 percent increase from this time last year.

One suspect was in custody and authorities were searching for other possible suspects still at-large.

The officer who died was said to have a wife and children.

The San Diego Police Department is now on high alert, after two of its officers were shot in the city’s Southcrest area on Thursday. Officers are still looking for possible additional suspects in the area.

The shooting in San Deigo has further escalated fears as it follows recent attacks on police at Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. According to Fox, “the two gang suppression officers reported they were making the stop shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday and nearly immediately radioed for emergency cover”.

Shortly after stopping their auto, the officers called for emergency cover.

One officer, who suffered multiple wounds, was rushed in a patrol vehicle to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest.

“It is extremely hard, but something you have to do”, she told reporters.

There’s no clear word on what triggered the incident, though the shooting comes at a hard time.

San Diego Police Department said on Thursday night that two of its police officers had been shot that night. “They arrived shortly on the scene and found both of our officers suffering from gunshot wounds”, said Zimmerman.
