San Diego police officer killed, second wounded during traffic stop

“Police body cameras have been praised as a tool that can lead to greater department transparency, better officer accountability and improved interactions between police and the public”.

However, it is the second police suspect that supposedly gave San Diego police the slip.

It has been nearly 13 years since former San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne pinned one of the department’s purple hearts on Officer Jonathan “J.D”.

Neither the officers who were shot nor the suspect in the shooting has been identified.

San Diego police and other law enforcement stage near the scene of a shooting of two San Diego police officers near South 38th Street in San Diego Thursday night, July 28, 2016. Police warned residents to remain in their homes as authorities conducted an active search. Roughly an hour-and-a-half later, police entered the home and found that the suspect had again evaded arrest. “The one who was killed and the one who was seriously wounded”, said Chief John Peters.

The shooting comes after a spate of attacks on cops in the United States in revenge for police killings of unarmed black men.

Officer DeGuzman served as a member of the San Diego Police Department for 16 years and was assigned to the gang suppression unit.

Zimmerman says the first suspect is in custody, hospitalized in critical condition with a gunshot wound.

Police departments nationwide have been on high alert following the killing of five police officers in Dallas and three in Baton Rouge, La., earlier this month.

“It happened extremely quickly, very quickly”, she said.

Zimmerman said that the officer had a wife and two children.

Both men were wounded despite wearing bulletproof vests.

Irwin was “resting comfortably” with his wife by his side this morning, with a good prognosis but facing “a little bit of a long haul” until he recovers, Zimmerman said. She said investigators have not determined whether it was a vehicle or a pedestrian stop or why officers were making the stop. He died in a hospital early the next day.

The wounded officer was DeGuzman’s partner, Wade Irwin, 32, who has been on the force for nine years.

The chief lamented recent increases in violence against police officers across the country. A helicopter hovered over the neighborhood.

Authorities detonated several devices at the scene that made deafening booms.

Then, about a dozen heavily armed SWAT officers raced another house about two blocks away, positioning an armored truck and robots outside. The possible suspect wasn’t there either.

Police arrested a second man, 41-year-old Marcus Antonio Cassani, on an unrelated warrant.
