Shortly after, officials took one suspect, who has not yet been identified, into custody. His wife was at the hospital.

She told reporters she had worked with Zimmerman before she was promoted to the police chief post in 2014. On Oct. 28, 2010, Officer Chris Wilson, 50, was shot to death during a probation raid at a Skyline-area apartment complex. He was rushed to the hospital in a squad vehicle.

The San Diego Police Department tweeted that Chief Shelley Zimmerman left the hospital where the second officer was in emergency surgery.

San Diego Police Officer Jonathan DeGuzman, shot to death in a traffic stop, was previously awarded a departmental purple heart after he was stabbed, according to NBC 7 San Diego.

“Heroic efforts by the officers on scene, heroic efforts by the doctors to save his life”, she said, “but heartbroken to report that they were unable to save his life and he is deceased”.

The names of the officers have not yet been released nor that of the gunman have been released by the police department.

They do know that the suspect is a Hispanic male adult, now in custody in critical condition.

Following the shooting, police launched a manhunt in the surrounding area, combing through the 3800 block of Boston Avenue and surrounding areas as they searched for a suspect.

“We don’t have enough information at this point”, she said.

The wife of the critically injured officer was beside him at the hospital as he underwent surgery, Zimmerman said.
