A police officer was fatally shot and another seriously injured during a traffic stop in San Diego late Thursday, officials said.

The incident comes as police in Southern California remain on high alert after the Dallas and Baton Rouge incidents, which both lead to police deaths earlier this month, and amid orders for greater vigilance.

A police officer died and another was wounded in a shooting at a traffic stop in San Diego, police said on Friday.

The police department said in a tweet that one suspect is in custody and other possible suspects are being sought.

Speaking outside the hospital Zimmerman said: ‘It’s a little bit of a long haul until he makes a full recovery, but the good news is that he is going to survive and he is going to recover’.

A suspect who was shot is in custody.

Zimmerman said police were investigating whether Cassani, who has a criminal record that includes drug, weapons and burglary convictions, had any role in the police shootings. In those cases, the shooters were upset, at least in part, over police shootings of African-American men in Baton Rouge and Minnesota.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer expressed sadness over the shooting of the officers and asked the community to support law enforcement.

Zimmerman told San Diego Fox 5 that she worked alongside DeGuzman when she was a lieutenant, and she called his death “gut-wrenching”.

“It happened extremely quickly, very quickly”, she said. The second suspect has been located and is in a house surrounded by San Diego SWAT officers.

The second officer underwent surgery and is expected to survive, police said.

Only moments before the shooting, Henwood had stopped at a Fairmount Avenue McDonald’s and took time to buy cookies for a 13-year-old boy who didn’t have enough money for the treat. Next week will mark the fifth anniversary of the officer’s slaying. Although the second officer, Wade Irwin, is still in serious condition, he is expected to survive the attempt on his life.

Zimmerman says she visited Officer Irwin and his family in the hospital on Friday. The Los Angeles Times says DeGuzman was the 10th American police officer shot in July 2016. Police gave no further information about Gomez or his role in the shootout except to say he was a suspect.

“This invaluable report is created to help us understand the risk that law enforcement officers face and to help us develop best practices to reduce officer fatalities”. “It is only getting worse”. Using a bullhorn, an officer spoke to a “Marcos” who was believed to be in the house.
