The researchers also said the illness caused by Zika virus infection is generally mild and had no major impact on individuals who had a normal immune system or who were not pregnant.

“Mosquito control is the key to preventing in-state transmission of the Zika virus in Kentucky”, Commissioner Quarles said. Those who do become ill have symptoms that may include fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis. “We urge residents to practice good water sanitation on their properties”.
The confirmation, made this morning, came just over a week after the Ministry of Health revealed that three people suspected of having Zika after returning from overseas were being tested for the virus.
State officials remind residents to follow the three D’s for mosquito bite prevention: Dress – Wear light colored long sleeve shirts and long trousers; Drain – Eliminate all standing water where mosquitoes breed such as bird baths, tires, buckets and gutters; and Defend – Use an EPA-approved insect repellent at all times for outdoor activities.
“The Commission is working closely with local and state health officials to ensure timely exchange of epidemiological, risk awareness and mosquito control data in our area to optimize vector control efforts”.
Local transmission of Zika virus has been reported in the United States.
Grimsrud said there are two known instances of the virus being sexually-transmitted in Canada.

The Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for about a week. “Prevention is with you, with me, with the commissioners”, he said.
