San Francisco Police officers shot and killed a man on 3rd Street in the Bayview around 5:00 p.m. today, the San Francisco Examiner reports.

Officers arrested San Francisco resident Jose Freddy Mata, 51, the following morning on suspicion of fatally stabbing 44-year-old San Francisco resident Jorge Villacorta-Garcia. A man who had been stabbed in the shoulder told police his assailant was still in the area. “I certainly would want to know more about why this individual posed a risk that the officer felt that he or others were in danger of being killed”.
Police said the man had threatened them with a kitchen knife when they confronted him on the side of a Bayview street, according to SF Gate.
It’s not clear whether the man has an object in his hands.
Then gunfire erupts – a rapid fire sequence that could have been more than a dozen shots – followed by screams of, “Oh, my god”.
In the witness video, a voice yelling “put it down” can be heard. Neither the shooting nor its results are shown in the video.
Chief Suhr said the man had a knife and that officers fired bean bag rounds at the man before firing live ammunition.
Police fired and struck the man several times with beanbags while moving away from him, also shooting the ground in front of him with another less-lethal weapon, Suhr said.
