San Francisco sheriff’s woes began before immigration uproar
“Local officials dropped those charges a few days later and released Sanchez onto the street despite a request from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain him for deportation”.

In Laredo, Texas, the day after Kate Steinle was murdered, Juan Francisco de Luna Vasquez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, beat his wife to death with a hammer. “I don’t think we can be subjective and release some people and not others on a whim or a wink or a nod”. San Francisco is one of dozens of cities that do not notify federal authorities when it comes into contact with an illegal immigrant.
“He has run into the worst luck of any politician in American history”, said ex- San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos, one of Mirkarimi’s key supporters. The city will only hold an immigrant for ICE if he has a violent felony conviction within the last seven years, or a probable cause for holding issued by a judge. “Neither is there a legal requirement that ICE provide a judicial warrant to law enforcement agencies in order to receive such notifications”, said Virginia Kice, ICE Western Regional Communications Director/Spokesperson.
Sanchez, for instance, had been the subject of an ICE retainer, not a warrant, asking local authorities to alert them if they intended to release him so the feds could reclaim and deport him. San Francisco, you can not break the law.
The case attracted national attention after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized San Francisco for local laws limiting assistance to federal immigration authorities aiming to deport individuals arrested for crimes.
Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi is calling for review of how his department and federal authorities communicate. Sanchez pleaded not guilty to murder and was held on $5 million bail, according to court records. Mirkarimi was sentenced to three years of probation and fined.
Sanchez has been in police custody since his most recent arrest. BLM spokeswoman Dana Wilson said the ranger was visiting San Francisco on government business when a bag containing the weapon was stolen from the auto, which was parked in city’s downtown when it was broken into, the newspaper said. Lee signed the law that Mirkarimi said he was following when the jail released Lopez-Sanchez.
Convicted felon Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, the illegal immigrant who has been deported back to Mexico on five separate occasions and has been accused of shooting Steinle, said that the gun he found wrapped in a shirt accidentally went off.
“This woman would be alive today if they did not have this stupid sanctuary law in that insane city of San Francisco“.
Earlier this year, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., submitted the Davis-Oliver bill, which would permit states, cities and counties to enact their own immigration enforcement measures, as long as they replicate what’s already in place at the federal level. Harris spoke out Friday in an interview with the Chronicle regarding the case of Steinle, whose alleged killer, Jose Francisco Lopez-Sanchez is an undocumented Mexican immigrant with a string of felonies and five deportations.
“The 2008 budget amendment was a choice between sending a political message or funding California law enforcement, and I chose to fund the police”, Feinstein explained in an email. “We don’t have this information yet, but going forward, we will thoroughly investigate the case”.
“My reluctance to answer these questions…is that I don’t actually know what happened…you’re talking about important details..and I don’t have any knowledge about what actually occurred”.

Following the November 20, 2014, creation of the PEP, Secretary Johnson stated in a memo that, “Due to limited resources, DHS and its Components can not respond to all immigration violations or remove all persons illegally in the United States” and must “ensure that use of its limited resources” is devoted to the pursuit of national security, border security, and public safety.
