San Francisco worldwide Aiport plays host to last ever US Airways flight

US Airways’ website will go away after midnight Friday, with passengers trying to book tickets there sent to AA.com instead.

The merger was problematic when US Airways and America West did it in 2005 and caused huge headaches for United and Continental in 2010.

Saturday is the day of reckoning for many plane travelers and, in particular, American Airlines, which is combining its reservation system with that of US Airways, a process that has traditionally caused major headaches and disruptions for passengers.

Maya Leibman, American’s chief information officer, said earlier this week that her team phased in the changes to put “less stress and burden” on the system and on employees. “We have tested on 30 regional flights, really, all the systems and procedures”. These protections became the standard for over one hundred thousand airline workers who were cushioned from the worst effects of mergers in post-deregulation. If done wrong, chaos can ensue.

It is worth noting that the DOJ cited the US Airways advantage fares in its initial objection to the merger in 2013, claiming that the combination would likely result in the elimination of these fares and overall higher prices for consumers. “I know people around the world because of this airline”.
