Sanchez hits another home run, Yankees rout Orioles 13-5

Sanchez is just the third player to hit 10 homers in his first 22 career games; the Rockies’ Trevor Story did it this year, and Boston’s George Scott enjoyed a similar run back in 1966.

What might have remained of Sanchez’s anonymity is melting away, as he said that he is starting to get recognized regularly on the streets of NY.

Chacin (5-8 overall, 4-6 with Los Angeles) was originally slated to start Saturday but manager Mike Scioscia made a decision to give lefty Brett Oberholtzer his first start of the season and move Chacin to the bullpen where he had a 2.55 ERA. On Saturday, he was the second-quickest to 10 career homers.

The Yankees broke the game open against Gallardo (4-6) with a six-run second. What he couldn’t do was contain Orioles star Manny Machado, who homered twice.

Sanchez hardly was alone in helping the Yankees get to within 2 1/2 games of the Orioles for the second wild-card spot. He has been absolutely lights out for Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre this season, pitching to a 1.52 ERA and 2.14 FIP while striking out 27.4% of opposing hitters.

The Tigers have won five straight to move back into contention.

Friday night was also just his 20th big league game of the season and 22nd of his career. Francisco Rodriguez got the last four outs for his 36th save.

Gregorius added an RBI single in the eighth inning as the Yankees reached 13 runs for the third time this season. One win against Baltimore made up almost as much ground. Minnesota has been tagged for at least eight runs in four straight games. He also singled, doubled, drove in four runs, scored three time and had Yankee Stadium chanting his name when he stepped in the box for his last at-bat.

There was some question about whether Jones would end up being in the starting lineup at all.

Smoak connected off Pat Dean (1-4) in the second inning and Donaldson followed three batters later with his 30th.

Closer Mark Melancon retired Christhian Adames for the final out for his 37th save. This team has hit 200 homers faster than any other in franchise history except for the 1996 version, which hit a record 257 home runs.

Hernandez (9-4) improved to 5-0 in eight starts since returning from the disabled list, throwing 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He completed a rehab assignment Thursday, appearing in five games across three minor league levels.

Consecutive two-out singles by Teixeira, Didi Gregorius and Castro tied the game, before the Yanks retook the lead on a double-steal that required a two-minute video review. “He’s patient. He gets his pitch and he’s not missing it right now”.

He bounded through the celebration at home plate before ripping off his jersey Superman-style and continuing the celebration bare-chested.

NEW YORK-After the Orioles returned from their longest road trip of the season with a 5-5 record, numerous teams’ fans were relieved.

The 43-year-old Colon (12-7) carried a two-hitter into the eighth inning and took over the team lead in wins.

Brian McCann also contributed an RBI single and a run-scoring double.

ST. LOUIS – Jedd Gyorko homered and Luke Weaver pitched six strong innings to earn his first major league win as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 on Friday night.

Two innings later, Castro (18th) and Hicks (seventh) each ripped a two-run shot to left against reliever T.J. McFarland for a 9-4 game.

Alex Rodriquez, whose retirement gave way to Sanchez’s fireworks, managed but seven home runs and 19 RBIs all season in 151 more at-bats. Five of his seven strikeouts were looking.

Orioles: RHP Kevin Gausman (5-10, 3.92 ERA) is set to make his fourth start this season against the Yankees.

Mark Teixeira said the players knew the situation during the deadline but that did not stop the players from wanting to win and make the playoffs.

It was the Orioles’ 200th home run of the season. Johnson hit a deep fly ball to right-center field that took one bounce before landing in the Marlins’ bullpen.
