A week of triple-digit temperatures awaited the 3,000 firefighters battling flames in rugged hills and canyons.

About 300 miles further north in drought-hit California, another fire ravaged a hilly area near the scenic coastal town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, churning through 16,100 acres (6,500 hectares) and destroying 20 homes, authorities said.

At the peak of the Southern California fire about 10 percent of Santa Clarita’s 200,000 residents had been ordered out of their homes, before most were allowed to return Monday night.

Fire officials have ordered the evacuation of more than 20,000 residents.

Santa Clarita is within an hour’s drive of downtown Los Angeles, and the Sand Fire’s effects have been widespread, with ashfalls reported in some parts of the metropolitan area.

Authorities today identified a man whose burned body was found in a auto in the driveway of a house in the area affected by the Sand Fire, and said he died after apparently refusing orders to evacuate the area. An autopsy was pending to determine the cause of the man’s death, which was being classified as an accident.

The single fire fatality was identified on Tuesday as Robert Bresnick, 67, whose body was found Saturday inside a burned-out auto parked in a driveway, said Ed Winter, assistant chief Los Angeles County coroner.

“The heat was so intense”, Franklin said Monday.

As of Monday night, a hot spot was visible inside what remained of Kim’s home.

Firefighters faced drier conditions and temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) again on Tuesday, but winds remained calmer, according to U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy.

About a dozen exotic animals displaced by the blaze began returning to a sanctuary in the Los Angeles suburb of Sylmar on Wednesday.

“Recent drone activity has occurred over the fire in the Bear Divide area”. He was confirmed to be one refusing orders to evacuate the area.

The Los Angeles Fire Department sent a water-dropping helicopter to join four others from the county Fire Department. Air quality advisories have also been issued for the Santa Clarita, Antelope and San Gabriel Valleys as well as the San Gabriel Mountains until at least midnight Wednesday.

Metrolink announced there would be no service at least one more day to and from the Vincent Grade/Acton, Palmdale or Lancaster stations.
