Sanders, Clinton to share Ohio Dem event

On Thursday, the political action committee of the Congressional Black Caucus endorsed Clinton. “I do not expect it from someone seeking the Democratic nomination”, Clinton said. “I think a Sanders victory would be of some historical accomplishment as well”, he said. “The simple truth is that there are very few in Congress who have a stronger civil rights record than Senator Sanders”. “She talked about getting the approval or the support or the mentoring of Henry Kissinger”, Sanders said.

Sanders succeeded much more in the domestic part of the debate. They disagreed over the size and scope of government and traded views on topics including race and criminal justice, immigration and Social Security.

CLINTON: Well, I know journalists have asked who you do listen to on foreign policy, and we have yet to know who that is.

How worthless are the Democratic debates? Some Sanders supporters were taken aback by that, and days later he and Sanders met in the White House.

At the same time, several of Mrs. Clinton’s answers reflected an urgent political imperative: to maintain and energize her deep support among minority voters in order to offset Mr. Sanders’s popularity with young people, liberals and some working-class white voters.

Even as she made efforts to project calm, Clinton swiped at many of Sanders proposals as unrealistic, even dishonest, saying candidates needed to “level” with the American people. “Why in God’s name does Wall Street make huge campaign contributions? I guess just for the fun of it. They want to throw money around”. He offered a ringing defense of his philosophy.

Again, I’m sure he didn’t mean it this way, but Sanders essentially said that race relations will improve when black kids stop hanging out on street corners and live productive lives instead.

Sanders has only fitfully gone back at Clinton when she’s gone after him, but he suggested Saturday that his patience is wearing thin. She then pivoted to an attack on his call for a Medicare-style, single-payer health-care system. If we reengage and get involved, yeah, we can have health care for all people, we can make public colleges and universities tuition-free.

Rather than pushing back, however, Mr Sanders responded with defiance. But Clinton continued to press her case. “In my view healthcare is a right of all people, not a privilege, and I will fight for that”.

In one of many moments of agreement between the candidates, Clinton concurred on a need to address a criminal justice system that incarcerates a disproportionate number of minorities.

In the sharpest exchange of the night, Clinton attacked Sanders for being too critical of Obama, who is extremely popular with the black voters who will play a big role in the outcome in SC and other upcoming nominating contests.

He called for “fundamental police reform” that would “make it clear that any police officer who breaks the law will in fact be dealt with”. Sanders drew about 20,000 people to two rallies in Minnesota last month and has identified the state as a top target.

Kasim Reed, a Hillary Clinton supporter, told CNN’s Erin Burnett that the claim was “dismissive and disrespectful” of the nation’s first African-American president and that Sanders’ rhetoric on Thursday reminded him of a county commissioner.

She won her first contest against Mr Sanders in Iowa by a whisker, but suffered a double-digit drubbing to him in New Hampshire on Tuesday.

After a sweeping loss in the New Hampshire primary earlier this week, the former Secretary of State aimed to stop the bleeding.

With the Democratic race heading to Nevada and SC, the candidates sought to appeal to the broader Democratic base that includes African-Americans, Hispanics and women. Billionaire Donald Trump, fresh from a commanding win in New Hampshire, will be tested by the state’s more conservative voters.
