Besides, it’s Sanders’ rival, Hillary Clinton, who held a premier cabinet position in Obama’s administration and carries his imprimatur; she’s positioned herself as the better steward of his legacy.

As opposed to previous Democratic debates, the Town Hall setting will be more informal, with more opportunities for the candidates to engage in back-and-forth conversation. And pressed on whether she was late in addressing income inequality, she said she has spent decades combating inequality of all kinds. Austin Graber, 22, said he thought Clinton was “the most qualified”. It’s hard. If it were easy, hey, there wouldn’t be any contest. “There are very different visions, different values, different forces at work, and you have to have somebody who is a proven fighter – somebody who has taken them on and won, and kept going, and will do that as president”. He argued that though Clinton has wide experience, she was wrong on key issues. This is going to be really interesting because I’m used to talking to the candidates myself and they treat us differently than they treat voters.

The event fell exactly a week before Iowans go to the caucuses, and as polls find Sanders narrowing the gap against Clinton among likely caucus-goers. “I will take on the greed of corporate America and the greed of Wall Street and fight to protect the middle class”.

The Human Rights Campaign is in Iowa for Hillary Clinton.

“I will not engage in insults”, Cruz said in Manchester, Iowa. But you know what, Hillary Clinton has been around there for a very, very long time, and some of these groups are in fact part of the establishment. Sitting down as he first came out on the stage, he quipped, “My wife told me to button my coat, but I think I’m too fat, so…”

About 1,700 students came to hear Lovato and Clinton Thursday.

At its core, the divide between Clinton and Sanders is about just how much to change current economic, health care and education systems, and what the federal government’s role in those areas should be.

“Yes, we will raise taxes”.

But, Obama said, Sanders could face the same scrutiny if he wins the early nominating states of Iowa or New Hampshire, which polls indicate he may do.

Bernie Sanders for his vote on the 2005 “Protection of Lawful Commerce and Arms Act”, (PLCAA) legislation that protected American manufacturers, distributors, and dealers from liability when the criminal misuse of their products, which included firearms, happened. And, living up to his image as a self-declared Democratic socialist, he warned corporations and the richest Americans that they would pay more. “I demand that Wall Street start paying its fair share of taxes”.

Moderator Chris Cuomo interrupted at one point.

“Experience is important, but it is not the only thing”, Sanders said, invoking the exceptionally experienced former Vice President Dick Cheney as he attacked Clinton for the same vote that President Barack Obama hammered her over in the 2008 Democratic primary.

The Democratic presidential candidates appeared one after the other for a half hour each at the town hall meeting at Drake University.

In the interview, Obama also disputed comparisons that are being made between himself and Sanders, who is often described as an underdog candidate who excites young voters and is drawing larger crowds. In the most recent CNN Poll of Polls, Sanders edges Clinton 46% to 44% in Iowa, with O’Malley at 4%.

After Trump earned a major endorsement from former 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin last week and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad dropped a bombshell, Cruz fired back with his own, boasting support from Glenn Beck and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who ended his own presidential bid a year ago.

Meanwhile, Obama and Clinton forged a close and, at times, affectionate rapport during her time in his Cabinet.

Women, non-whites, self-identified Democrats and those over age 50 are Clinton’s strongest backers. Clinton argues that as a former secretary of state and former senator from NY, she is the more experienced White House candidate. And Lauren Ellbogen, 18, said she’d be working at the caucuses for Clinton and said she didn’t think Sanders was “realistic”. She is smart, and she is ruthless, and she is good at politics, and I am exhausted of people acting like that’s a bad thing when somebody is fighting for a better country. “It’s a tough campaign and it should be because it’s the toughest job in the world”.
