Sanders Drops In On New York Delegation

One of the memorable moments of the roll-call vote was when Sanders’ brother, Larry, cast a vote for him on behalf of Democrats Abroad. First Lady Michelle Obama speaks during the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Monday, July 25, 2016.

She will be formally proclaimed the party’s nominee after a roll call vote at around 6pm (2200 GMT) at the Democratic National Convention, making the former first lady and secretary of state the first female presidential candidate of a major U.S. party. It was a move that allowed the party to nominate Obama unanimously.

Mines also told the crowd of about 500 marchers that “Hillary Clinton has blood on her hands”.

Hostility is being heard, too.

Michigan, as it happens, was Sanders’s most surprising state win. It is interesting to me that convention speakers who don’t sound like they’re shouting when you watch the speech in person do seem a bit overmodulated when you watch on TV. Ted Cruz and charges of plagiarism by Trump’s wife, Melania, the out in the open anger within the Democratic Party between Sanders and Clinton supporters has given Trump reason to cheer.

Dee Martin, who sits on the board of the The Feminist Majority Foundation, a Texas-based nonprofit, said she doesn’t think the party’s divide will be a problem in the general election.

Michelle Obama’s message was at once conciliatory, raw and personal – and earned by far the most positive response of the night.

Bill Clinton, 69, has the power to convey the human aspects of a woman who is often seen as hard to read outside her political ambitions and detailed grasp of policy.

“Our hearts are with him, our hearts are with you”, she said.

During the Democratic Women’s Caucus’ event at the DNC Tuesday, Brazile asserted Democrats would get behind presumed nominee Hillary Clinton in November despite the backlash from Bernie Sanders supporters at the start of the week. “We’ve got to elect Hillary as the next president of the United States”, Sanders said. The governor has always been considered more of a centrist who has worked closely with the Senate’s Republican leadership, leading some Democrats to fume over his reluctance to actively campaign to flip the body to Democrats (a priority of Mayor Bill de Blasio, with whom the governor has feuded).

Trump has made his opposition to trade agreements the centerpiece of his economic argument.

A very vocal group of conventioneers spent most of Monday jeering any time Clinton’s name was mentioned on stage.

Obama will address the convention today.

“He’s going to talk about the fights of her life: what she’s really stood up for, who s he is, the advocate she is and the change maker”, she said.

Clinton was firmly on track to write the next chapter of a political story that was briefly interrupted in 2008. Back then, the roll call was stopped when it came to NY, and Clinton, after her long and divisive primary against Obama, called for a vote for Obama by acclamation. Bernie Sanders formally nominate rival Hillary Clinton as part of Tuesday’s planned roll call vote. Last night, Sanders clearly showed that endorsing Clinton wasn’t top of the list.

Once the nomination is sealed, the Clinton campaign planned to turn to a Day 2 program dubbed “Fights of Her Life”, highlighting her advocacy for children, health care and September 11 recovery efforts, the campaign said. But for most of us who aren’t white, or straight, or living in liberal enclaves, for the black women in that overheated arena in Philadelphia, the impact would be unbearable.

Cuomo also tried to pivot the convention back to Clinton’s nomination.

Clinton also is tapping her entertainment connections. One question of the day was whether Sanders would press for a count by all the states, as his delegates want, or interrupt the process to ask that her nomination be approved by acclamation.
