The talk by Michelle Sahli, PhD ’12, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health & Health Sciences at the University of Michigan-Flint, is titled “Up to Our Necks in Flint River Water: A Public Health Crisis”.
“The loss of safe drinking water supplies in Flint and in communities across the country has given rise to a crisis of public confidence that should never be allowed to exist in America”, Mr. Cardin said in a statement.
Because of objections to taking up the legislation and another unrelated bill, the Senate will move instead to a bill to respond to the opioid crisis gripping many states.
“I think there’s just some outstanding holds but those aren’t necessarily related to the water infrastructure bill”, Peters said.
Snyder, who has apologized repeatedly for the state’s role in the crisis, has agreed to testify to Congress about the Flint crisis. According to a Cruz spokesperson at the time, the water donation demonstrated “the pro-life values of Senator Cruz”.
A national poll released this week by the Value of Water Coalition found that 76 percent of respondents were very or somewhat concerned about being able to drink water directly from the tap.
Snyder has also said missteps by the federal Environmental Protection Agency helped lead to the crisis in Flint, a predominantly African-American city of 100,000 about 60 miles (100 km) northwest of Detroit. We haven’t gotten through them all. “But what about the other places where children are testing positive for lead poisoning?”
Water was not properly treated to keep lead from pipes from leaching into the supply.
Students in other programs, public health practitioners and UB community members also are invited to attend this free event.

Currently, lead levels test around 4 parts per billion (ppb), which is well below the EPA’s limit of 15 ppb, Mr. Lisle said.
