Sanders: Obama Should Order New Analysis on Dakota Access Pipeline Project

Morris said the Standing Rock camp has drawn more than 3,500 people, where some 200 flags are flying, from tribes in NY, the Great Lakes, the Pacific Northwest, California, Mexico, the Amazon, Hawaii and New Zealand.
The pipeline is being built near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation next to Cannon Ball in the state of North Dakota. Sanders and Schultz were speaking at the protest against the Dakota Access oil pipeline outside the White House.
Archambault said the consultations were one-sided and that “they met with us after their plans were already made”.
“We are committed to completing construction and safely operating the Dakota Access Pipeline within the confines of the law”, Kelcy Warren, Energy Transfer Partners’ chairman and chief executive officer, said in the letter.
In total, the pipeline will make 200 river crossings, including the Missouri and MS rivers, in four states.
The tribe argued that the pipeline project violates federal laws and would threaten drinking water and disturb sacred sites.
A student-led anti-prison protest also happened alongside the pipeline protest, some holding signs with messages like “No prisons, no pipelines, no pipelines to prisons”. The reservation is home to 8,000 people and the issue created both a legal and physical stand-off that’s drawing protesters from all over. Thousands of people from hundreds of tribes are now gathered there.
When they heard about what was happening in North Dakota, she said they had to go out and help the people there make their voices heard.

President Barack Obama suspended the construction of the pipeline Friday, the order should stand through the end of his administration.

“Infrastructure plays a critical role in maintaining and growing America’s energy renaissance and it’s important that our energy infrastructure is able to meet the needs of consumers and our growing economy”, he said in a written statement. “Our fight isn’t over until there is permanent protection of our people and resources from the pipeline”.
