Sanders outlines plan to overhaul immigration laws

Senator Bernie Sanders drew a clear line between two of his major campaign interests – education and criminal justice reform – in his opening comments at the BET 2015 Presidential Justice Forum on Saturday (Nov. 21), making clear that his goals involve addressing several of the major intersections his supporters care about.

Sanders says he would seek an overhaul of immigration laws, including a pathway to citizenship within five years for people living in the US illegally.

Marquette Law School pollster Charles Franklin said that both Clinton and Sanders have strong support from Democrats, but in hypothetical general election matchups, Sanders has more support from independents and even a handful of Republicans.

First, because voters tend to trust Republicans more than Democrats on national security issues.

The Vermont independent who’s seeking the Democratic nomination is pushing a “single-payer” plan. Clinton, the Democratic front-runner, has racked up a string of formal endorsements, but many rank-and-file union members remain drawn to Sanders.

Walsh, a former union member, forcefully endorsed Clinton on Sunday, casting her as the most qualified candidate for the job.

Early on in her second presidential bid, the former secretary of state had been careful not to overemphasize her husband’s involvement in the campaign, but Bill Clinton has now slowly begun taking a larger public role, the newswire noted.
