“Hillary Clinton has the capacity and the instincts needed to carry forward what has been started”, Grijalva said Thursday.

“Hillary Clinton is a proven leader who shares our values”, said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in a statement. “Thanks to you, we’ve reached a milestone”, she told cheering supporters in Brooklyn, saying for the “first time in our nation’s history” a woman would lead a major-party ticket. Still, many of his supporters had hoped that he would be considered for the job.

In a turn from his usual campaign speech, Sanders also emphasized the importance of young people running for office at the state and local level to bolster the Democratic Party.

Bernie Sanders will discuss his presidential campaign’s next steps in a live stream for his supporters Thursday evening. “I firmly believe that her victory will only come when she and the Democratic Party articulate the themes this movement has so powerfully expressed”.

But Democrats interviewed by the Journal said Sanders is not on the list.

In the meantime, several of Sanders allies have gotten ahead of him on the road to unity.

Instead, he has maintained he will stay in the race until the party convention in July in order to push his progressive platform and advocate for procedural changes within Democratic Party, including banning superdelegates and instating same-day voter registration during primaries.

Sanders’ support within labor circles contributed in part to the AFL-CIO’s decision to withhold its endorsement during the primaries.

Ms. Clinton is the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee for the November 8 presidential election, having won the last primary contest this week in the District of Columbia.

Clinton won the endorsements of numerous AFL-CIO’s largest members in the past year, including the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the American Federation of Teachers, paving the way for the AFL-CIO to back her campaign.
