Sandra Bland jail death: Jury rules against indictments
A Baltimore judge scheduled a retrial date Monday following the mistrial of one of six officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray.

Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, criticized the investigation at a Monday afternoon press conference.
During the first presidential debate in Las Vegas in October, Sanders brought up Bland in response to the question of whether “black lives matter” or “all lives matter”. It’s possible that the cameras missed it, but she can be heard complaining “You slammed me, knocked me to the ground”. The driver and officer exchange heated words, and Encinia eventually threatened to use a stun again against Bland-“I will light you up!”-dragged her out of the vehicle, and arrested her. Bland was taken to Waller County jail, where she was found hanged with a plastic trash bag from a metal barrier in her cell”.
The grand jury plans to reconvene in early January to “take up remaining issues”, Jordan said, but refused to comment on what those issues might be, as grand jury proceedings are confidential. While her death was ruled a suicide, the entire nature of the situation-the seemingly excessive force used during the stop, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her untimely death-raised suspicions and criticisms.
The lack of an indictment led to Sandra Bland being the top trending topic on Twitter in the United States. She was found dead three days later. Bland’s family and friends have argued that she never would have committed suicide because she has just arrived in town from Chicago to start a new job. The Houston-area lawyer pointed to the federal wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Bland family and said even the family is not alleging there was a homicide. The attorneys for the Bland family disagree and are making the argument that they need the evidence that is now being presented to the grand jury in the ongoing criminal case, in order to make their arguments in the civil lawsuit.
The Bland family, however, believes that the case hasn’t thoroughly been investigated.
Sanders, who was campaigning in Iowa, says the US must reform “a very broken criminal justice system”.
Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw has said Encinia – who in June completed a year-long probationary stint as a new trooper and has been on administrative duty since Bland’s death – violated internal policies of professionalism and courtesy. “I simply can’t have faith in a system that’s not inclusive of my family that’s supposed to have the investigation”. My thoughts are with her family and her loved ones tonight.
