After a grand jury refused to hand down indictments against police officers for the jailhouse death of Sandra Bland, finding she hanged herself in her cell, “social justice” activists and journalists refused to accept the finding.

The grand jury reached the decision that no felony crime was committed by the sheriff’s office or jailers after a closed-door hearing.

“I’m coming here in front of you to let you know, I am not OK coming out of this hearing today”, said Geneva Reed-Veal, the mother of Sandra Bland. Bland’s death, ruled a suicide, raised questions about jail safety standards, mental health checks and race and policing.

Special prosecutors aren’t saying what other potential indictments could still be on the table, nor releasing any details of what happened in the grand jury room.

Dashboard camera video of Bland’s arrest on July 10 shows Encinia informing Bland he was giving her a warning for failing to signal a lane change, but then the encounter became heated when he asked her to put out her cigarette.

Dash-cam footage showed the traffic stop quickly becoming confrontational and the 28-year-old was arrested for assault.

In essence, the jury did not believe that any officer used excessive or unnecessary force on Bland during her apprehension nor her stay inside the county jail. She was found dead three days later.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says Sandra Bland would not have died in police custody if she had been a white.

The family’s lawyers echoed the family’s concerns and said they have little faith in proceedings over evidence that isn’t released to the public. When she was jailed, Bland had indicated on her intake form that she had recently attempted suicide but still was not placed on suicide watch.

Her death came amid increasing scrutiny across the nation over police treatment of African-Americans after the deaths of unarmed African-Americans by police, including Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Eric Garner.

The Walter County grand jury shared their decision after 11 hours of deliberations on Monday. He said the case is “still open”.

Grand jurors considered evidence collected by a team of five special prosecutors named by the county’s district attorney, Elton Mathis.

“#SandraBland’s case shows that we need to do more than #SayHerName”.

Lambert did not seem to feel confident that anything new will develop when the grand jury meets in January.

Encinia, who in June completed a year-long probationary stint as a new trooper, has been on administrative duty since Bland’s death.

Her family has questioned the medical examiner’s finding that she killed herself. Indicting an officer is generally a rare act, but Bowling Green State University professor Philip Stinson, who receives federal funding to track police violence and arrests, told the Des Moines Register previous year that there is no government or scholarly database that tracks the outcome of grand jury proceedings involving officers. “They found that he violated internal procedures, the Department’s courtesy policy basically”, Smith says.
