Out of office, Mr Berger’s reputation was tarnished when it was revealed that he took classified documents related to Clinton’s presidency from the National Archives.

Berger died Wednesday. He was 70 years old and in ill health.

After leaving the administration, Berger was in the news in 2005 when he was fined and sentenced to community service for removing classified documents from the National Archives. He expressed regret for his actions.

The reason for death was cancer, stated a press release by his consulting firm, the Albright Stonebridge Group.Berger was White Home national safety adviser from 1997 to 2001, when the Clinton administration carried out airstrikes in Kosovo & against Saddam Hussein’s forces in Iraq. I am certainly one of them, Bergers colleague, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, said in a statement. He was one of my dearest friends and among the wisest people I have ever met. I will always treasure our decades-long partnership, both in and out of government, and I will be forever proud of what we accomplished together.

Out of government, he helped found the firm now known as the Albright Stonebridge Group. From his service in President Carter’s State Department to President Clinton’s National Security Advisor, Sandy devoted himself to strengthening American leadership in an uncertain world. Additionally, he was honored earlier this week with the inaugural Global Humanitarian Award by the World Food Program USA (WFP), which has also created the Samuel R. Berger Humanitarian Fund to focus on humanitarian responses to conflict, an issue Sandy was committed to for years. Our thoughts are with Sandy’s beloved family, including his wife Susan, his children Deborah, Alexander and Sarah, and five cherished grandchildren.
