The defense secretary noted that on each stop of his visit last week to Afghanistan – which included stops on Bagram and Forward Operating Base Fenty in Jalalabad – he saw US and Afghan troops working side-by-side.
But the Afghanistan Defence Ministry said fighting was carrying on and that reinforcements had been sent to the town, which is a major production centre for opium in Helmand province.
Speaking to reporters in Kabul, he also appealed for global military help, especially air support. The Province borders Pakistan and has been cited as an important poppy-growing region for Taliban militants. “These factors complicate the battle for Sangin”. South Asia analyst Michael Kugelman on Afghan Taliban’s capture of Helmand Michael Kugelman, a Senior Associate for South and Southeast Asia at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars spoke to CCTV America.
Eyewitnesses say some government forces were still fighting in the district centre but are cut off and facing slaughter by the Taliban.
An Afghan army soldier, Yaseen Zamarai, told The Associated Press news agency from inside the town the Taliban were outside his building and had been pushed back after entering once earlier in the day.
Afghan military airstrikes also bombarded Taliban strongholds in Sangin overnight, killing 25 insurgents and wounding another 12.
A Taliban statement said that before “interfering” in Afghanistan, Britain should have ‘studied their ancestor’s history, to learn from it. If they learned lessons from their repeated defeats in Afghanistan, they wouldn’t come to invade us. “It’s not that we are afraid of death, but we didn’t think that our brothers would leave us like this”.
Meanwhile, there are reports that a group of British forces have been deployed in Helmand province to support the Afghan national security forces in repelling the Taliban offensive, however the British officials have said the forces are deployed in the area and have and advisory role rather than combat role.
The Taliban statement listed barriers to peace negotiations, including United Nations sanctions on individualTaliban figures which were extended this week, and the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan, with specific mention of the British troops that arrived in Helmand on Wednesday to provide support for Afghan forces battling in Sangin.
Afghan forces have struggled to contain the insurgency since overseas troops stood down combat operations past year. The U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation have around 13,000 troops in the country, a lot of them operating under the training mandate.
Before the strikes, the Taliban already held three Helmand districts and moved freely outside the main populations, centers exercising control over strategic transportation routes.
