The only time before this she reached a Grand Slam final in women’s doubles was at the 2011 French Open.

Tennis ace Sania Mirza, who won the Wimbledon women’s doubles title with partner Martina Hingis, tweeted on Sunday that it had been one special journey for the duo. This Wimbledon title comes 12 years after the Indian had won the junior doubles title at the All England Club.

Looking back to her period of success in the late 1990s, Hingis said: “It feels like it was in another life”.

Hingis won the Wimbledon doubles with Helena Sukova in 1996 and Jana Novotna in 1998. But what paved the way for the higher seeds was that they made the breakthrough at the most important moments of the match.

The Russians responded strongly at the start of the third set. But they regrouped and managed to break right back.

Game 10 – Indians get the pivotal first point but a solid serve has the game tied at 15-15. If they still come out, serving unbelievable the whole match, we knew that at some point hopefully it was going to come down.

Hingis collected her first piece of silverware at Wimbledon since 1998 with help from the 28-year-old Mirza. Since then, Mirza has risen to No. 1 in the world and Hingis to No. 2. Saturday’s trophy comes after a long gap of 17 years. In the second game of the first set, a textbook, neatly-disguised lob bamboozled her opponents.

It was a remarkable lob from Hingis that gave them two break chances and they converted the second.

It was, to be frank, a match that Hingis and Mirza, the No1 seeds, rarely looked like winning.
