Santa tracked by Google, Microsoft

In 1958, the governments of Canada and the United States created the bi-national air defense command North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which then took on the tradition of tracking Santa.

The Colorado-based organization, which stands for North American Aerospace Defense Command, is keeping tabs not only on where Santa and his reindeer are at any given moment around the world, but how many gifts he’s delivered.

And thanks to Google, Microsoft, and NORAD, you can track Santa’s whereabouts from your phone, computer, or tablet. That’s 40 calls per volunteer per hour.

The tradition started in 1955 when Colonel Harry Shoup, who was controlling the crisis phone at Air Operations Center at Continental Air Defense Command, received a phone call from a child expecting to reach Santa Claus.
