Santiago Canizares: ‘Real Madrid need David de Gea’

Real Madrid yesterday officially handed over the number one shirt, previously worn by Iker Casillas to Keylor Navas, hinting at a possible Old Trafford stay for another year for David De Gea.

With Real Madrid unwilling to part with their Ramos, who has recently been named as their new captain following Casillas’ exit, any deal for De Gea does look to have hit a brick wall in terms of negotiations.

Despite this, Real remain interested, but with talks between the two sides having not progressed as desired they are willing to back off until August when a greater effort is expected.

“With Casilla’s arrival we have more competition and we are happy”.

But reports in Spain this week suggested the Spanish giants have put their pursuit of De Gea on hold and will instead wait to seal a deal for the goalkeeper next year, when his United contract expires in the summer.

“I feel like I have butterflies in my stomach and I’m really eager, above all else to start training, which is what matters most”.

Last season, Navas had worn the No. 13 shirt, which has been given to new €6 million signing Kiko Casilla.

“I’m fully aware that what I’m going through at the moment happens to very few people”. He’s a goalkeeper of worldwide standard, one of the best in the world.

Casillas, however, was all-but flung out the back door as he wasn’t given the opportunity to say his farewells to the Real Madrid supporters – no interviews, no special honours.

“First and foremost, I’d like to avoid injuries, which is always important for an athlete”. I hope I can win a lot of trophies.
