Santos wants more from Ronaldo

He took to Facebook to rip Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo. “I believe Portugal will win, I’m sure the Croatia coach thinks he will win”.

“We wanted to finish first but after a while, it became essential just to make it through”.

“I’m happy because the team was in dire straits as we were down three times and had to chase down our opponents to score to ensure we did not go home”.

Ronaldo scored in the 50th and 62nd minutes, the first with a spectacular back heel, making him the first player to score in four consecutive European Championships.

Portugal head coach Fernando Santos insists not all of his decisions revolve around Cristiano Ronaldo, despite setting his team up to get the most out of their captain. He has to score because he’s a victor. “He feeds on goals”.

Hungary, Iceland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland produced the biggest stories of the opening stage, progressing to the last-16 round against all the odds. Portugal has to step up their game if they want a convincing Euro 2016 campaign as they have played poorly in the competition, so far.

Nani said: “To tell you the truth, before we came here we said our ambitions were very high”.

“We respect Portugal, but we believe in our quality, togetherness and character which we have shown till now and we are looking forward to this challenge”, he said.

Ronaldo wiped away a week of frustrations in France.

Ronaldo’s on-pitch redemption began after he had again failed to convert a series of free kicks.

Zoltan Gera smashed Hungary into an early lead with a stunning volley from the edge of the box in the 22nd minute.

The group stage of Euro 2016 has been completed, with 16 teams now set to do battle in the knockout rounds.

Hungary went in front again in the 47th minute as skipper Balazs Dzsudzsak’s free-kick deflected off Andre Gomes before flying into the net. Ronaldo then came through with his second.

“I think Cristiano has always been there, always playing well for us throughout the tournament”.

A late winning goal. “We managed to attack; we managed to score… but we are weaker defensively”, he added.

But the beef didn’t stop there, with Iceland’s Elmar Bjarnason coming out with this absolute zinger firmly aimed at Ronaldo. “We are English football insane”.
