Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who is up for best actress at this year’s Academy Awards for her role in ‘Brooklyn, ‘ has signed on to headline the drama ‘On Chesil Beach’. She’s now nominated for her second Oscar – this time for Best Actress – for 2015’s Brooklyn, and has Loving Vincent (with Aidan Turner and Douglas Booth) and The Seagull (co-starring Elisabeth Moss) set for release later this year.
Helmed by Number 9 Films, which was behind Todd Haynes’ Carol, this will be Cooke’s feature directorial debut.
The book, which appeared on the shortlist for the Man Booker Prize in 2007, tells the story of a newlywed couple in 1962 who find their relationship irrevocably altered whilst honeymooning in a Dorset hotel. The ensuing months saw many changes to the project, including the attachment of director Mike Newell and the casting of Carey Mulligan in the lead role, now to be played by Ronan.
It’s an extremely exciting prospect to be reunited with Saoirse Ronan on such a lovely and heartbreaking project.
Chesil Beach, a real and well-known location, is famous for its 18-mile length, of which much is separated from the mainland by a sea-salt lagoon, and the special quality of its stones.

Before then, Ronan will next be seen on stage in The Crucible on Broadway from 1 March.
