Odusile was declared victor in a keenly contested election during the national delegates conference/ presidential election of the NUJ held at the weekend in Abuja.
According to Buhari, with Odusile’s worthy credentials, long experience and antecedents as a highly respected and reputable professional, the NUJ boss can be expected to discharge his new responsibility of leading the union to greater heights of accomplishment with distinction.
Buhari further assured the new NUJ president and all journalists in Nigeria that his administration would consistently uphold their right to perform their constitutionally assigned role in society without hindrance.
The Lagos Assembly Speaker also called on those who lost out in the election to cooperate and work together with the new executives to move journalism profession forward in the country. “His devotion to the ethics of the profession is beyond doubt”, the statement said. I am really happy, not only for you, but also for the entire body of journalists in Nigeria. The election is over, what is left is for all hands to be on deck to ensure that the Waheed Odusile led administration succeed in its resolve to move the journalism profession forward in the country.
He said journalists put themselves through hard, often uncharted channels to ensure that democracy had its highest expression.
Odusile scored 354 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr Rotimi Obamuwugan, who scored 333 votes, and four others, namely, Michael Aladenika, Dele Atunbi, U.S.A.Uzaka and Mustafa Lamidi. who ran for the post of President with him. This is what Nigerian journalists have just done and I want to especially commend them for this lofty achievement.
