The BJP will hope a weakened Congress will make it easier to persuade regional parties to back his reforms. “We will work together (with allies) to resolve these issues”.

PM Modi to attend Sonowal’s swearing-in ceremony He was asked how he meant to seal the Indo-Bangladesh border, an issue he had spoken about on Thursday soon after his party romped home in the election. Talking of the plans of his party regarding putting an end to infiltration, Sonowal cited Rajnath Singh’s Karimganj district visit in January.
“As soon as the border is sealed permanently, the infiltration trend will stop automatically. If there is no strong alternative, people will go to BJP in 2019”, he said.
The seat has been wrested from Congress. Union minister Sushma Swaraj said the Assam poll victory is a result of lifetime work of workers and leaders in building the organisation.
“The problem will get solved and action will then be taken against infiltrators as per existing law”, said Assam’s CM-to-be. The total length of the Indo-Bangladesh border is 4,096 km of which 263 km falls in Assam.
While the BJP won 60 seats on its own in the 126-member House, its ally AGP bagged 14 seats and BPF 12 seats.
Congress will closely watch how BJP fulfils its poll promises like providing 25 lakh jobs, giving salaries to government staff on time amidst financial constraints and solving the age-old illegal immigration issue, Bora said.
LDF leader P Vijayan, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Union Minister and BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal are all set to become Chief Ministers of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Assam respectively.
As expected, regional parties are on course to win elections in the eastern state of West Bengal and southern state of Tamil Nadu, while Congress also lost the smaller southern state of Kerala to a left-wing alliance. On the election victory, Sonowal gave the credit to his party and its alliance partners for “taking together all ethnic groups, giving them respect and representation”. “My greetings to BJP President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, she said.
Sarbananda Sonowal thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support during the campaign of Assam Assembly elections.

Kotak Securities said the state elections do not affect the chances of implementation of GST, but it added that the government may take a stab at the GST in the next parliament session with or without the support of the Congress.
