Pul further said that the victory of the BJP and its alliance in Assam would have far reaching implications for the northeast region, and specially Arunachal Pradesh.

The high-stakes elections saw the end of Congress rule in Assam where it had scored a hat-trick last time under Tarun Gogoi.

The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party seized control of restive Assam from the centre-left Congress party, which promised to “work harder” to win people’s confidence after losing ground in several states.

The newly elected legislators of the BJP and its allies met at the BJP party headquarters. Meanwhile, victorious regional satraps-namely West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee and J Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu-may well look to push the reset button with the BJP.

It was a similar story for the saffron party in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, Assembly poll results for which were declared Thursday.

“Tomorrow, if Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton win in America or if Nawaz Sharif returns to office in Pakistan, can it be attributed to the performance of the Modi government?” the Sena asked sarcastically.

Attacking the Congress for its “untiring propaganda” of branding BJP as “divisive and anti-Muslim”, Naqvi, also the MoS for Minority Affairs, noted that “in a state like Assam a large number of Muslims and Christians voted for BJP, while the Congress got an unprecedented drubbing”.

“So the stark difference in the size of the two parties is: it’s an all-time high for us and an all-time low for them”, he said.

BJPs Atul Bora has won by the highest margin of 1,30,197 votes from Dispur assembly constituency while his party colleague Kishore Nath won by the lowest margin of 42 votes from Barak Valleys Borkhola seat in the Assam assembly polls. Ruling Congress has bagged 26 seats, AIUDF 13 and one seat has gone to an independent.

The BJP has also won the four assembly segments in the two Hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, where the Congress had been the traditional victor.

Tamil Nadu has, since 1967, followed an independent political trajectory in which none of the national political parties have had any role to play.
