Guwahati: Citing rampant corruption and lack of development during the last 15 years of Congress rule, Sarbananda Sonowal, who is been branded as the lucky mascot for the BJP, has put the issue of infiltration as his government’s priority in the hill state of Assam.
The BJP appears to have learnt its lessons from Bihar and Delhi. It shows the dominance that the Congress had in this state. Mamata Banerjee’s support for GST is a flawless illustration of how BJP can push its legislative agenda while isolating Congress. Second, autocratic governance could result in alienating regional parties and uniting them against the government, as happened in the 1970s when Indira Gandhi was PM.
The outcome of the assembly polls was on expected lines in Assam, West Bengal and Kerala but Ms Jayalalithaa, who was written off by all poll pundits and observers, sprang a surprise in TN by outsmarting her bitter and wily political rival, DMK supremo M Karunanidhi.
“The Prime Minister’s focus on developing the north east region is one of the main reasons and factors for the BJP to emerge victorious in the assembly elections in Assam by such a huge margin”.
Hence, through Sonowal, the BJP found a ideal candidate who would blend its natural flavour of nationalism with the Assamese sub-nationalism.
He thanked Shah for the central leadership’s help during the elections. The alliances with the AGP and Bodo People’s Front, too, played in its favour.
Just compare all that with the Congress’s non-existent plans for the state. Instead of tackling poverty, unemployment, inflation, agrarian crisis, and infrastructure problems, the BJP at the Centre is only propagating a “Congress-mukt Bharat”, he alleged.
