Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office warns of “jury duty” scam

The King County Sheriff’s Office says it continues to hear about a jury duty scam that has been occurring in the Seattle area over the last couple of years. Someone may call you and identify themselves as a King County deputy or detective and tell you that you failed to show up for jury duty. The KCSO urges residents who receive a call like this to hang up immediately and call the KCSO.

The caller then began giving out information about the victim such as immediate family names, making the victim think it was a legitimate call. When the card-issuing banks tried to telephone or email their customers to verify the card requests, the thieves intercepted the calls and emails and gave the required verifications. Green Dot cards are prepaid debit cards that are purchased at local stores.

Once the victims’ phone and email accounts were accessed, thieves used mobile telephone applications to remotely put the victim’s home telephones in a call-forwarding mode, diverting calls to the thieves’ mobile phones.

The sheriff’s office said no law enforcement official will ask for money for a warrant or arrest.
