Saskatoon police say a teenage girl is in custody after an infant died on the weekend.

The Saskatoon police major crimes unit, forensic identification unit and the provincial coroner are investigating.

Police say the teen is not related to the baby.

“The girls met her downtown, she had nowhere to go”.

Ministry of Justice spokesman Drew Wilby said the girl was seen leaving an open-custody youth facility at about 1:45 a.m. on Saturday.

“All I wanted to say was let there be justice served for my grandson”, the grandfather said as he choked back tears.

Longman said he raised his children to help others in need and indicated that they were trying to “help out a person that is lost to society and the world”. She was returned to open custody in Saskatoon in April.

“Young offenders under an open-custody sentence are able to leave under their own accord, in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act”, he explained.

The grandfather, mother and many other family members of six-week-old Nikosis Jace Cantre were in Saskatoon Provincial Court Tuesday for the teen’s second appearance.

According to court documents, the girl was sentenced on December 22, 2015 to 10 months in open custody, followed by five months of community supervision and one year of probation.

The grandfather asked during the girl’s brief appearance Tuesday if he could address the court.

They include: breaking and entering, causing a fire, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon and theft while armed with a tire iron.

The family is holding a candlelight vigil for the infant Tuesday evening at 9:30 p.m. Longman said anyone who wants to show support for Nikosis is invited; however, an exact location was not announced.
