Craig Smyth and Tiina Flank were dancing in the crowd Saturday night and before the show they said that they wanted to experience it as though they were there in Kingston.

Thousands of fans across Canada congregated at watch parties for the televised concert.

Man Machine Poem, the band’s most recent album, was released in June (16).

Gord Downie, who received his diagnosis previous year, and The Tragically Hip rocked out for almost three hours in front of a sold-out crowd in Kingston, Ontario.

The band shared a similar image on their own social media pages.

“There is a Canadianness that runs through them to the point where new citizens should be given a Tragically Hip CD after they take the oath”, says music historian Alan Cross. Viewing parties are planned across the country and amongst pockets of Canadian expats overseas.

HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Justin showing up to The Tragically Hip’s last concert?

The band played the final show of their farewell tour in Kingston, Ontario and Canadians tuned in to see it live. On Saturday, the prime minister’s official photographer tweeted a photo of Trudeau, 44, and Downie, 52, embracing before the show.

He twice praised Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was in attendance.

Like a shooting star streaking across the Canadian sky, Gord Downie gave the country one exuberant burst of energy before bowing out.

“The Hip is a Canadian treasure and I’m really going to miss them”. “I hope Gord Downie lives long enough to write a song about Trudeau’s decision not to honour Treaty 8 by greenlighting the Site C dam”.

Trudeau says the band remains anchored in Canada in so many ways through their lyrics and music.

There were cheers at Mike’s Pub when lead singer Gord Downie, who is suffering from terminal brain cancer, stepped onto the stage.

The Hip then segued into their latest album “Man Machine Poem”, with four tracks including the single “In a World Possessed by the Human Mind”.

Downie – along with guitarists Rob Baker and Paul Langlois, bassist Gord Sinclair and drummer Johnny Fay – finished with fan favourite Ahead By A Century.

During the performance of Grace Too during the second encore, Gord appeared to break down in tears before dropping his microphone to the floor in a poignant moment that left fans teary-eyed themselves.

“Thank you for keeping me pushing”, Downie told fans.
