Sassy Stormtrooper Gwendoline Christie

Captain Phasma appears to have an integral role in the new “Star Wars” trilogy, as the armored soldier is set to appear in Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII”. As we found out in the trailers, she was left on Jakku by her family, and has been there ever since.

We’re now two weeks away from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens-so close we can taste it. But before you sit down in the theater, check out this wonderful LA Times article that reveals some great information about two of the movie’s new female characters: Rey and Captain Phasma. Not much more than that is known.

Actress Gwendoline Christie loves how dramatic the Star Wars dress designed by her boyfriend is.

“She’s an important character, a baddie in the best sense of the word”, Kennedy said.

And it also seemed to be a pleasant surprise for Christie when she learned her character was almost male instead.

In an era when gender is an incredibly hot topic, Star Wars is now doing it right (despite some problems along the way, as this video illustrated today).

“I think that’s great of them, don’t you?” she asked. Which was intentional. Kathleen Kennedy wanted to make sure a new kind of female character was introduced into the mix. “No. No!” she said, laughing in disbelief. “I was going to say let’s do some lying down, but that’s not a power stance”.

She said she views Captain Phasma as “progressive” and is proud of films and TV shows that represent men and women in more diverse ways, citing “The Hunger Games” and “Game of Thrones” (in which she plays Brienne of Tarth) as examples. We respond to her because of her actions.

“We haven’t seen a female Stormtrooper behave that way”. It’s not about her being conventionally feminized. At this early stage, it’s still too soon to judge her character.

Fans will not be subjected to either Jar Jar Binks or the Ewoks in the movie.
