Ten days ago, Joo was presented to the media in Pyongyang and said he had not been able to contact his family but wanted them to know he was healthy.

Saturday’s military parade is expected to be one of North Korea’s biggest.

“We want to celebrate in the most significant way”, said Sin Un Gyong, a university student.

Recent detailed imagery shows that a disused Pyongyang airbase had grown from just 40 tents to approximately 800 tents, 700 trucks and 200 armored fighting and military vehicles.

He added that its Scud “knock-offs”, which are short-range tactical ballistic missiles, could target military facilities – including those operated by its arch-enemy the United States – anywhere in South Korea.

Kim has yet to make a state visit overseas and although his visits to various farms and factories around the country are featured daily on North Korean news broadcasts, he rarely speaks at public events.

But anxiety over a possible launch has faded.

The projects include new hydropower plants and high-rise apartments, but it is unclear how much of North Korea’s limited financial resources have been put into improving the lot of the majority of its citizens who are not fortunate enough to live in the relatively developed and affluent capital.

The MoU called the North’s decision to repatriate Joo a positive step, but said it should also repatriate detained South Koreans Kim Jung-uk, Kim Kook-gi and Choi Chun-kil in Northern side.

The North is unlikely to go ahead with a rocket launch around the anniversary in the face of the global community’s strong warning against such a move. Specifically, posters have been found with writing scribbled over the poster’s declaration of North Korea as “the victor”; the text was changed to “the defeated”. Furthermore, Blinken stated that if North Korea continues to refuse to engage in talks or insists on continuing its nuclear tests, the United States and its allies will have no choice but to take defensive measures if the North does engage in direct provocation.

And analysts say North Korea’s supreme leader is still growing their weapons program.

His heirs, son Kim Jong Illinois and grandson Kim Jong Un, have held the central role in the party, although their official titles have all differed.

In his appearance and demeanor, the younger Kim has made an effort to hark back to the rule of his grandfather. Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, the second daughter of Indonesia’s founding President Sukarno, had said in July Kim was being recognized for being “consistent in carrying out the ideals of the great leader Kim Illinois Sung, which is to fight imperialism”.

Xi hailed the “glorious tradition” of the friendship between North Korea and China. Hardy asked. “There’s an argument going on at the moment that the South Koreans have an very bad lot to fight for with the way they have built their country up over the past 70 years from poverty to one of the world’s big economies”.

North Korea is set to hold a huge military parade on Saturday to mark the anniversary with Liu Yunshan, a member of the Chinese Communist Party’s politburo standing committee, attending.
